QUALIFICATIONS FOR POSITION OF ON-BOARD DIRECTOR
Managing groups:
I am completing my master’s thesis at Royal Roads University on “how our government ministry can use green teams to reduce our environmental footprint and work towards cultural change”. Throughout the research this has meant establishing a network of employees (all volunteers) from across our organization to form a team and work on green initiatives for our head office building and our ministry. In total 61 employee’s have attended these meetings and we have a core enthusiastic group of 25 working on 15 environmental initiatives (e.g. green team website, rooftop garden, commuter challenge, teleworking (i.e. work from home), and more). This has been a very rewarding process both for the ministry and for me to establish leadership and facilitation skills in a large group of my peers. A summary of the research proposal can be found here: Green Teams in Government Proposal.
I recently led a group of six individuals from different parts of the globe on an adventure philanthropy expedition through Vietnam. We spent week one bicycling across the beautiful and mountainous Vietnam and week two working with a community building a 320 square foot home for a family in need. The trip was so rewarding and I feel so grateful and thankful to have had the opportunity. I wrote more about the expedition here: Roadmonkey 2011 Vietnam An Attempt At Words.
Passionate about building community:
As mentioned, I am the facilitator of a large green team at our ministry head office. I have been on the board, a member of, and conference organiser for the Saskatchewan Green Building Council for the past six years, promoting green buildings and sustainable communities in the Province of Saskatchewan. Herein my passion lies in building community and sharing my passion for sustainability with others. I frequently guest lecture at elementary and high schools in my city and join boards and committee’s with environmental and social agenda’s (i.e. Bike to Work Regina, commuter challenge, workplace fitness, workplace social club and United Way fundraising committee, youth engagement in sustainability, etc.)
Teaching:
I am full of ideas, energy and enthusiasm surrounding courses on sustainable development (i.e. environmental, economic and social) that would be simply awesome for Class Afloat students. I am extremely excited about an opportunity to work and live aboard Class Afloat and to continue to change the world!
I am able to teach RECR 1263 course. I have experience leading volunteer adventure expeditions in foreign countries, and travelling cross country (Canada) via tandem bicycle. Through these and many other experiences including courses in my masters program at Royal Roads University and my thesis Action Research on Green Teams in the Public Service of Saskatchewan I feel a mix of confidence and excitement towards sharing these experiences with Class Afloat students.
I would be able to guest lecture in the Introduction to Sociology and/or Psychology classes on topics related to my personal blog why is all I ever want is more, which looks at one of the great environmental challenges in the western world through a philosophical lens. I have studied ecological footprint extensively and could discuss this in the Atmosphere, Weather and Climate course. I have also studied environmental economics, environmental management (using an adaptive approach), green buildings and sustainable development at length and could guest lecture on any of these topics as they may fit in Psychology, Sociology, International Relations, and Atmosphere, Weather and Climate courses.
